My post for Blog Action Day.
SAVE EARTH.
the actions.
How many times have you left your computer on for more then 24 hours just to get a game/program/ music/ movie downloaded to your computer?
How many times have you unwittingly not recycle or have the selfish thought that "Oh, just recycling one bottle will not make a difference one la."
Imagine, one bottle not recycled by one person, that's not a lot, but what if twenty people thinks the same way?
the effects.
20 plastic bottles that cannot be decomposed, break down into simpler substances, rot. Which then, has to be burnt. Burnt, to release many many more poisonous gases into our Earth. Which then, will become more of Carbon Dioxide and it will cause Greenhouse effect, and then it will be much much hotter. Then, because of Carbon Dioxide in the air, the rain that comes down will react with the carbon dioxide, causing Acid Rain. Acid Rain, which will corrode rocks, buildings and even roads. Not to mention that the rise in the temperature will cause the melting of glaciers and ice and kill cute little animals that can only live in the cold like your cute little Penguins, Walrus, Polar bears and Seals.
How can you help?

When you have finished your drink from the plastic bottles, do not throw them into just any bins you see beside you, either hold on to them till you see a recycle bin for plastic bottles or bring them home, clean them and recycle them by putting it in a plastic bag provided for recycling.
takeaways.
One plastic bag, one Styrofoam box/ one plastic container, one wooden chopstick [ made with chemical substance], one plastic fork/spoon/knife. Taking that one of each kind of utensils/ cutlery were used, there will be four kind of harmful substances used or should i say, more usage of those will lead to higher demands, which will mean more harm caused. Do you really need the cutlery? The plastic bag will cause the same harms that had been mention above. The Styrofoam, something I MUST touch on.

Insulation decreases the energy requirements to heat or cool dwellings, hence the use of Styrofoam or other building insulation materials is environmentally beneficial, although when its useful life is over, its degradation in nature may take several hundred years. Styrofoam is rarely recycled because it is usually not cost effective.

The use of expanded polystyrene foam in disposable items such as foodservice packaging has been banned by a number of locations. A more detailed description of these activities can be found in the article on Polystyrene.

Although to be said to be beneficial, it will take many years to degrade, and hence, it's not good, and also
Expanded polystyrene is not easily recyclable because of its light weight and low scrap value. It is generally not accepted in curbside programs. Expanded polystyrene foam takes a very long time to decompose in the environment and has been documented to cause starvation in birds and other marine wildlife. According to the California Coastal Commission, it is a principal component of marine debris. A CIWMB (California Integrated Waste Management Board) Report finds that “in the categories of energy consumption, greenhouse gas effect, and total environmental effect, EPS’s environmental impacts were second highest, behind aluminum.”

How can you help?
When you take it home, you can always use the ones you have bought at home, the metal ones.
Or else, I'm sure there is one or two of the plastic cutleries at home, use them, and then wash them and reuse them the next time. Return the cutleries if they were given to you.

The plastic bags. If you are buying for many many people, or you are buying from different stores, use as little plastic bags as you can, place them all in one! It wouldn't hurt, trust me. You can also bring from home! The recycle bags? You can use them, or else, reuse the plastic bags that you have at home!

Styrofoam boxes/ plastic containers.
Bring your own containers! No one has done it before, but why don't we be the first? It just proves that we are creative and we would think of new ways to save the earth! Reduce, reuse, recycle, right? When you are doing takeaways, present your containers and ask them to pack your food into your containers!

at home.
The excess plastic bags that you had been taking from the supermarkets? The HARMFUL plastic bags? Use them for disposal of garbage and refuse. That way, you will be reusing.
All the cans and plastic wrappings at home, RECYCLE! Do what Melvin's and my family does, put it in a plastic bag, after an considerable amount collects over time, put it outside your house and wait for the man to come and collect it! That's all!

So.. Do your part, save earth.
Little actions that can add up to a lot of good deeds (:
  1. Dispose your plastic bottles and other recyclable materials into the recycle bins and not just any rubbish bins. (That doesn't mean you litter.)
  2. Remove your plugs from the electric box after you are done with it, messy wire but healthy earth.
  3. Minimize the hours which you leave your computer on unnecessarily.
  4. Switch off the lights that are not needed.
  5. Use environmental friendly products! Check the labels of the products.
  6. Use reusable cutleries.
  7. Reduce the use of plastic.
  8. Bring your own recyclable bags when you go shopping or keep the products into a bag which you had brought out with you.
  9. Plan your shopping trip where you will end up going to shops that offer bigger bags, then, put everything into that big bag!
  10. Bring your own plastic containers from home to buy takeaways.
  11. Practice Recycling at home!
  12. Keep the newspaper and sell it to the Rag and Bone men!
  13. Practice the 3 Rs! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! No harm, at all!
